Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS is FDA approved as of 2008 and has extensive data to support its effectiveness for treatment-resistant depression, including several studies by independent parties, and is being used around the world. TMS is similar to the commonly known MRI, but uses focused magnetic fields in a small region while MRI fields are unfocused and actually many times stronger.
TMS is considered a safe, non-invasive, non-drug, and effective treatment for treatment-resistant depression, and is currently being studied for various other conditions, such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and smoking cessation. As of right now, our office only offers this treatment for Major Depressive Disorder, but can consult with you on other conditions.
TMS works by stimulating the left prefrontal cortex of the brain via magnetic fields, inducing electrical impulses that in turn stimulates the limbic system deeper in the brain, a region that has consistently shown to be involved in mood, specifically depression. In short, TMS delivers antidepressant effects without the common side-effects of prescription antidepressant medication.
SJIWC is happy to announce that we now provide TMS and are contracted under several insurance plans to ensure you have access to highly trained providers without the high cost. Prior to your consultation, we will work to get authorization by your insurance to ensure the treatment will be covered for you. You will then be thoroughly assessed to ensure you qualify and are a good candidate to receive this treatment by a counselor and physician, who will be with you throughout the entire journey. We will monitor your progress closely and use the same holistic approach that our practice stands by with your overall treatment plan.
