Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is FDA approved as of 2008 and has extensive data to support its effectiveness for treatment-resistant depression, including several studies by independent parties, and is being used around the world. TMS is similar to the commonly known MRI, but uses focused magnetic fields in a small region while MRI fields are unfocused and actually many times stronger.
TMS is considered a safe, non-invasive, non-drug, and effective treatment for treatment-resistant depression, and is currently being studied for various other conditions, such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and smoking cessation. As of right now, our office only offers this treatment for Major Depressive Disorder, but can consult with you on other conditions.
The treatment works by stimulating the left prefrontal cortex of the brain via magnetic fields, inducing electrical impulses that in turn stimulates the limbic system deeper in the brain, a region that has consistently shown to be involved in mood, specifically depression. In short, TMS delivers antidepressant effects without the common side-effects of prescription antidepressant medication.
We can use of TMS to help you
SJIWC uses their unique approach towards providing individualized treatment by using screening tools and rating scales and a professional psychiatric evaluation to evaluate not only symptoms of depression, but also anxiety, level of disability, life satisfaction, and overall wellness and balance. The same doctor will then provide two separate 45 min to 1 hour individual sessions to further evaluate you and put together a specific individualized wellness oriented treatment plan to accompany your TMS program.
SJIWC is directly contracted with several insurance plans to ensure you have access to highly trained providers without the high cost. Prior to your consultation, we will work to get authorization by your insurance to ensure the treatment will be covered for you. You will also be thoroughly assessed by a counselor & patient educator to ensure you qualify and are a good candidate to receive this treatment, while helping you to answer any questions.
We will monitor your progress closely and continue to use the same holistic approach that our practice stands by throughout your treatment journey.
